Space shuttle Atlantis began its cross-country journey back to NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla., on Monday, June 1. Mounted on a modified Boeing 747 shuttle carrier aircraft, Atlantis took off from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. The trip, flown during daylight hours and in precipitation-free weather, will necessitate several stopovers for fueling and is expected to take at least two days to complete.
